Tapping in to Anticipation


Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t sleep the night before Christmas?  Or the day before your first trip to Disneyland, the circus, or even the county carnival?  What was the feeling that you had?  What thoughts were you thinking that gave you such anticipation?  Did you methodically think through the event or did you just randomly think about different parts that gave you great excitement?

What happened to that type of excitement and anticipation?  Where have those feelings and thoughts gone?  Where has the ability to be excited, thrilled or delightfully surprised gone?  Now that we are adults and supposedly “in charge” of our own lives, why don’t we purposely add some excitement, delight, or surprise into our daily lives?  In other words, where is your anticipation?  Where is your delight?  Where is your curiosity?

Just as our parents planned some of these wonderful events and memories for us, we need to do the same for ourselves.  We need to sometimes “make” our own excitement, our own joy; our own anticipation.  We need to tap into the reality of anticipation.  We need to bring to ourselves those great feelings again.  Why?  Because it feels good.  And because it is good for us.

Purposely doing something positive for ourselves is a good habit to nurture.  Being clear that we are worthy, valuable and deserving is the first step to all the good stuff.  If we can’t value ourselves, others will tend not to either.  If we can’t give to ourselves, why would others?

Which leads me back to the original question?  What are you doing or have you done lately to give yourself some excitement? Some anticipation?

I love anticipation!  I understand that oftentimes it is the anticipation of something that is really the jewel.  I love having things to look forward to.  I purposely make lunch dates so that I can connect with my friends AND have something positive to look forward to.  Positive anticipation and excitement are part of the juice of life.  What do you do for yourself that gives you anticipation and joy?
